Cameroon is known as 'Africa in miniature' due to its remarkable diversity. Connecting north and central Africa, It has French and English speakers, many different types of landscape and many religions. Safety is patchy at best, particular near its borders. Paul Biya has been president since 1982 and most Cameroonians live in dire poverty.

Mount Cameroon rises 4,040 metres (13,255 ft) straight up from the Atlantic coast near the city of Douala and is the highest mountain in the region. The top is accessible to hikers. The village of Rhumsiki in the north attracts visitors to its remarkable scenery, dotted with volcanic plugs.
