Although neighbouring Rwanda has achieved stability in the years since the 1994 genocide there, problems persist in Burundi, one of the poorest countries on earth. Banditry and points of conflict between Hutu and Tutsi are to be found throughout the country and travel after dark is not recommended.

If you are one of the few tourists who does go, there are a number of national parks and nature reserves throughout. You can see crocodiles, leopards, snakes, chimpanzees, buffaloes and many other types of animals and birds. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to the country except the capital, Bujumbura.
