British Indian Ocean Territory

The British Indian Ocean Territory has dozens of islands, with only one of them being inhabited – the largest and most southerly - Diego Garcia. This hosts a joint military facility of the United States and the United Kingdom, and entry to the island is greatly restricted. There is no native population left there.

The islanders (Chagossians) were evicted in the 1960s and settled in Mauritius and the Seychelles, and have been fighting in British courts ever since for the right of return. There is, naturally, no tourism industry on the island. The Maldives lie to the north and the Seychelles far to the west.
