A 27-year civil war killed millions before a 2002 ceasefire, and ther is still fighting in the oil-rich enclave of Cabinda, to the north of the rest of the country. Living conditions for most people are dire, despite the wealth of resources in the country. It has rainforest, savannah, mountains, desert and beaches. Landmines are a huge problem throughout the country and will continue to be so for decades.

The Togolese soccer team bus was attacked in Cabinda before the 2010 African Nations Cup. Three people were killed. It is a former Portuguese colony, though the civil war destroyed most of its infrastructure, and travelling within the country is difficult.
